Aro represents the Aro Confederacy, an African trading empire which existed in Southern Nigeria's interior from 1690 to 1902. It is an Animist state lead by the Ibo culture POPs, with Ibibio as an accepted culture.
With a fairly large population it can potentially do well, though would need to conquer its neighbours if it wishes to survive and Westernise, one advantage is being inland and so protected (at least initially) from Europeans attack. Annexing Calabar should prove easy and from there Warri and the other Nigerian states, until you can challenge Sokoto.
